Southern Cardamom REDD+ Project - Cambodia

About the project
Situated in Cambodia, the Southern Cardamom REDD+ Project is an initiative designed to combat one of the major drivers of climate change, tropical deforestation, whilst promoting and maintaining biodiversity through the project’s existence. Spreading across 445,339 hectares, the area is globally significant for ecosystem servicing, wildlife conservation, and community livelihoods, serving as the region’s most important climate change mitigator. It has helped to avoid emissions of approximately 12 million tCO2e during the first monitoring period, and over 115,000 million tCO2e over the lifetime of the project.
The project creates new and sustainable livelihood opportunities for locals, from direct employment to alternative income-generating activities and initiatives to stimulate investment from businesses. Ultimately, resulting in reduced environmental pressure and an increase in community well-being. Further benefits see the project protecting habitats and endangered species in an effort to conserve wildlife.
