Carbon accounting software helps businesses measure, manage, and report their greenhouse gas emissions, but with dozens of platforms available, choosing the right one takes more than a quick Google search.
This guide explains what to look for, what to avoid, and how to find a tool that works for your business, not just on paper.
What is Carbon Accounting Software?
Carbon accounting software is a digital tool that helps organisations calculate their greenhouse gas emissions across Scope 1, 2, and 3. It automates data collection, applies recognised emission factors, and produces reports aligned with standards like the GHG Protocol, CSRD, and certifications like ISO 14064.
Businesses use it to track progress toward net zero, respond to customer and investor questionnaires, and meet regulatory reporting requirements.
Do I need Carbon Accounting Software?
Not every business does, at least not straight away. If you are just starting out, a carbon footprint assessment delivered by a consultant may be the right first step. It gives you an accurate baseline without committing to a platform before you know what you need.
If you are measuring annually, managing multiple sites, or preparing for formal disclosure, dedicated software becomes much more valuable.
What to look for in carbon accounting software
Recognised emission factors
Look for platforms that use published, regularly updated emission factors from sources like DEFRA, the IEA, or the GHG Protocol. The source should be visible in your outputs. Proprietary factors with no transparency make your data hard to verify and your reports tricky to defend.
Scope 3 coverage
Scope 3 emissions, those that occur in your supply chain and value chain, are often the largest part of a business’s carbon footprint and the hardest to measure. Check whether the platform covers Scope 3, how it handles data gaps, the collection of supplier data, and whether it uses spend-based or activity-based methods.
Disclosure alignment
Your software should produce outputs that align with the framework you are reporting against. Common frameworks include the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard, CSRD, PAS 2060, and Science Based Targets. Ask the provider directly whether their platform has been used to support submissions under the standard you need.
Audit-ready reporting
If you are disclosing emissions to customers, investors, or regulators, your reports need to be traceable and defensible. Ask to see a sample report before you commit. It should clearly reference the emission factors used, show how figures were calculated, and be readable by a non-specialist.
Support and expertise
Software alone will not get you to net zero. If carbon accounting is new to your team, look for a platform that includes expert support, or consider working with a consultant who can handle the process on your behalf. Getting your baseline right the first time saves significant rework later.
Questions to ask before choosing a platform
- What emission factors do you use, and how often are they updated?
- Is Scope 3 included, and how do you handle missing supplier data?
- Which reporting standards does the output align with?
- Can I see a sample report?
- Is there human support available, or is it fully self-serve?
- Has the platform been used to support formal disclosure or certification?
- What does data security look like when handling sensitive data on the platform?
- How is AI used on this platform? Are there any integrations, or is the data handled by AI?
